The South Western Regional Manager National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Jaconius Musingwire has attributed the continuous Wetland encroachment on corrupt civil servants who issue illegal land tittles in water catchment areas across the country.
According to Musingwire the technical urban and municipal authorities connive with rich people to give them physical plans and land tittles which are against the law.
He made the remarks yesterday while launching the environmental conservation and restoration of Rufuuha Wetland in Kakukuuru Rweikiniro Sub County in Ruhaama county Ntungamo District where over two acres of banana plantations, gardens, and eucalyptus trees were cut.
Musingwire noted that all land titles within the wetlands are to be cancelled immediately.
Recently the Ntungamo district council tabled the Environment protection and Management Ordinance 2018 for the second time that seeks to set up a mechanism of protecting and restoring the depleted wetland in the District.
This follows the outcry of civil societies and people of Ntungamo for the encroachment of Rufuuha Wetland in Rwendahi village Rweikiniro and Ngoma sub counties which powers its water in River Kagera.
